The Village of Walnut Creek

The Village of Walnut Creek recently received notification from the US Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of its approval in the Community Rating System (CRS). By rating Walnut Creek as a Class 8 community, our residents can now enjoy a 10% reduction on their flood insurance premiums if renewed or issued after October 1, 2014.

According to David L. Miller, Associate Administrator of the Federal Insurance and Mitigation Administration of FEMA, in a letter to Mayor Danny Jackson, stated, “I want to congratulate your community on its application to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS). . . . I commend you on your community’s actions and your determination to lead your community to be more disaster resistant. This commitment enhances public safety, protects property, preserves the natural functions of floodplains, and reduces flood insurance premiums.”

Copies of the FEMA letter are available in the Village office if any resident needs to furnish the information to their insurance agent.

DIDJANO that the USPS has standards for the location of mail boxes?  While completing the engineering work for our recent road project, we noted that some of the roadside drop offs may be caused by the mail delivery truck driving off the road to reach some of our mail boxes.  Now would be a good time to see if yours complies and correct it if it does not.  Here are the guidelines: Place the mailbox where a carrier can safely reach inside without leaving the truck. That means positioning the front of the mail box (not the post) back about 6” to 8” from the edge of the road and about 41” to 45” off the ground. The post should be secure and safe. The best supports are designed to break or fall away if a car hits them. This means that a wooden mailbox support should be no bigger than 4” x 4" and a steel or aluminum one should be no more than 2" in diameter. Bury your post no more than 24” deep, so it will give way in an accident. Don’t use potentially dangerous supports, such as heavy metal pipes or concrete posts. Please check yours to ensure that it meets all these requirements.  This information is taken from the USPS website:

The Village of Walnut Creek surrounds two large lakes and a top-rated golf course in the eastern part of Wayne County, North Carolina. Although Walnut Creek is a relatively new community, the tall pines, the majestic oaks and the flowering dogwoods give evidence that the beauty of the area has existed for many years.

Approximately 370 families enjoy the peace and tranquility of the village. There are only a few businesses within the corporate limits of the village and Walnut Creek is truly a neighborhood community.

The residents of the village elect a village council to govern the community. Danny Jackson presides over the council meetings as Mayor of Walnut Creek. Greg Ricker is Mayor Pro Tem. Lou Cook is the Village Administrator and Sharon Geelen serves the council as Assistant Administrator & Clerk. The Police Department ensures a safe and secure community.

If you'd like to contact the Village directly, please fill this form out and we will get back with you as soon as possible.
